The top photo was taken near Kennicott House at The Grove National Historic Site in Glenview, IL on October 1, 2010. Notice a second smaller gray fungus also on this fallen tree. This is about 20 inches (51 cm). The bottom fungus is on a city parkway tree on Patton Avenue in Arlington Heights -- and it looks like brains! Luckily, no zombies were lurking about! It has sprouted on an injured part of a living tree which was struck by a car some 12 years ago. Notice the sawdust from bug damage near the lower part. It is about eight inches (20 cm) in diameter.
